    Enrollment: All students must produce the following prior to the onset of training - Valid (photographic) government identification. Registration begins at 7 AM each day.  The course ends at 4 PM CST on the 3rd and final day.

    Attendance Requirements: Daily attendance and 100% participation in each module is required to obtain this certification.

    Location: Only offered at our Lafayette location.

  • Course Summary

    The Basic Safety Training course is a 3-day course that includes theory and practical hands-on training and assessment for the following four modules of STCW A-VI/1-1 to 1-4. The four modules can be taken together over 3 days or broken into individual modules as listed below.

    Successful completion of these courses will satisfy the training requirements of Section A-VI/1 and Tables A-VI/1-1,A-VI/1-2, A-VI/1-3, and A-VI/1-4 of the STCW 2010 Code as well as 46 CFR 11.302(d), 12.602(d),11.302(a)(3), 12.602(a)(3), 11.201(i)(1), 11.302(a)(4), 12.602(a)(4), 11.302(e), 12.602(e).

  • Target Audience
    These courses are intended as basic training for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on board ship as part of the ship’s complement with designated safety duties in operation of the ship and have previously held an STCW endorsement. 
  • Theory Learning Objectives
    Instructor to explain and demonstrate:

    Upon completion of Basic Fire fighting Refresher, the student will be able to:

    Properly don a fire suit
    Properly don and use a self-contained breathing apparatus
    Use portable fire extinguishers to extinguish small fires
    Extinguish extensive fires with water using jet and nozzle sprays
    Advancement of a hose team with the team leader giving commands
    Entering a smoke-filled internal space with SCBA and extinguish a fire with a fire hose
    Properly entering a watertight door with a fire behind door
    Rescuing a victim (165lb mannequin) from a smoke-filled room wearing an S.C.B.A.
    Taking immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency
    Perform an emergency drill following a station bill
    Identify what extinguishers to use on what class fire
    Properly ventilating a fire
    Correctly overhauling a fire

    Upon completion of First Aid and CPR Refresher, the student will be able to:

    Assessment of needs of casualties and threats to own safety
    Appreciation of body structures and functions
    Position casualty
    Apply resuscitation techniques
    Control bleeding
    Basic shock management
    Measures to take in the event of burns, including chemical and electrical
    Moving a casualty
    Bandaging and use of material in an emergency kit

    Upon completion of Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities Refresher, the student will be able to:

    Comply with emergency procedures
    Take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment
    Observe safe work practices
    Understand orders and be understood in relation to shipboard duties
    Contribute to effective human relationships on board ship
    Understand and take necessary actions to control fatigue

    Upon completion of Personal Survival Techniques Refresher, the student will be able to:

    Don a lifejacket
    Don and use an immersion suit
    Safely jump from a height into the water
    Right an inverted liferaft while wearing a lifejacket
    Swim while wearing a lifejacket
    Board a survival craft from ship and water while wearing a lifejacket
    Take initial actions onboarding survival craft to enhance chances of survival
    Stream a drogue or sea anchor
    Operation survival craft equipment
    Operate location devices, including radio equipment
  • Practical Learning Objectives
    Upon completion, the trainee will be able to practice all items noted in the Theory Learning Objectives.
  • Certification Details
    Written Exam: A minimum written test score of 70% (80% is required for PSSR). Students that fail the test will undergo remediation and be allowed 1 retest. A second failure requires repeating the course before they may test again. The student must satisfactorily perform hands-on evolutions as required by USCG.

        • Cancellation Policy Cancellation fees apply if cancelled within 7 days of the course start date . The amount retained will equal 100 percent of the transaction. Any refund requests after this period are to be requested from the trainer.
